This week our speaker for class was Dr. Georgia Dunston. She is the founder of the National Genome Research Center. She is also a coveted professor here at Howard University. Here she is a professor of Physics and Astronomy. She is also the former chair of the Department of microbiology. She has studied in wide range of disciplines including diseased common to African Diaspora communities, organ transplant research, and the creation of more effective health options in underserved communities. Dr. Georgia Dunston has a Ph D in Human Genetics from the University of Michigan. Her mentor was a biology professor Louis Austin. He gave her the motivation. Dr. Georgia Dunston has been apart of the Genome Project. The project attempted to study and map the structure for the DNA molecule. She has been published a lot. She has done articles in Microbiology, Oncology, Genetics and human development. Dr. Georgia Dunston’s presentation was entitled “Abandonment, dismemberment and Reawaking: The History and Legacy of Howard”. She focused on the history of Howard and it’s legacy. It also focused on how this University pursues wisdom in this present time. “the sign of ‘our time’” is that we will be judged by not only knowledge, but by how well we solve problems of the world. She discussed the future of genome of medicine and how it will be personalized. Each person will have their very own genomic medicine.
